DA Beeson to run for congress

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” Martin Beeson, a Western Slope district attorney, has announced his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District currently held by Democrat Rep. John Salazar.

Beeson, a Republican, was first elected district attorney for the 9th Judicial District in a 2005 recall election. The judicial district covers Garfield, Pitkin and Rio Blanco counties and includes Aspen and Glenwood Springs.

His announcement came in a news release late Sunday.

Beeson last month requested a grand jury to determine if charges are warranted in the Thanksgiving weekend carbon monoxide deaths of Parker and Caroline Lofgren and their children, 10-year-old Owen and 8-year-old Sophie. The four were found dead in a home outside Aspen after wining a weekend at a vacation home in a fundraiser. Investigators say a disconnected exhaust pipe was leaking the carbon monoxide.

Salazar, first elected in 2004, was re-elected in November with 61 percent of the vote. The sprawling 3rd Congressional District encompasses most of the Western Slope and southern Colorado.
