Daughter, father die in murder, suicide

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department Monday reported an apparent murder-suicide of Michael Roy Bovee, 42, and his daughter Courtney, 16.

A relative who asked not to be identified discovered the bodies at 7:18 a.m. Monday at the Bovees’ home at 0329 Coryell Ridge Road, south of Glenwood Springs.

Ron VanMeter, public information officer for the Garfield County Sheriff’s office, said that because of evidence at the scene, including a handgun, sheriff’s deputies determined the deaths were an apparent murder and suicide, both committed by Michael Bovee.

VanMeter reported that Courtney suffered “life-long medical problems.”

Garfield Sheriff Tom Dalessandri believed that Courtney suffered from a variety of disabilities, and was a special needs student at Glenwood Springs High School. A call to Glenwood Springs High School was not returned Monday.

Courtney’s mother lives in Salt Lake City and was not in Colorado at the time of the killings, VanMeter said.

Michael Bovee operated Sopris Window Coverings, which he initially ran out of Sopris Lighting on Highway 133 in Carbondale. He recently moved the business to his home on Coryell Ridge Road, which is midway between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale along the Roaring Fork River.
