A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Aug. 17 for construction of De Beque Fire Protection District’s new station.

The district covers 800 square miles in Mesa and Garfield counties.

The ceremony will take place at 4580 I-70 Frontage Road, De Beque, with appetizers and refreshments provided.

The station, seven years in planning, will be built with no debt to the fire district taxpayers, district officials said.

The fire board set aside money over the seven years and got grants from the Mesa County Federal Mineral Lease District, Garfield County, Chevron and, this spring, $2 million from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.
