Demons qualify three to state wrestling tourney

Glenwood Springs wrestling coach Guy Brickell left the 4A Western Regional a happy man.

That’s because three Demons – 103-pounder Miguel Vega, 125-pounder Mike Mills and 160-pounder Chris Ayala – are bound for next weekend’s state tournament at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Ayala, a senior, placed second in his weight class, losing only to Eagle Valley’s Matt Kottenstette in Saturday’s final.

Vega and Mills, both juniors, placed third and fourth, respectively, at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, site of the two-day tournament. The top four in each weight class earned trips to the state meet, which runs Thursday through Saturday.

“Those were the three that, based on paper, we thought had a real good shot at qualifying,” Brickell said . “To get those three, we’re pretty happy.”

And Brickell couldn’t be happier for Mills and Ayala, who have put in tons of time on the mat.

“I’m really ecstatic that Mills and Ayala qualified,” Brickell said. “Those two have really committed to wrestling. They spent all last spring wrestling and freestyling and really put their time in. They’re good role models for the rest of the kids.”

Ayala’s state trip will be his second in as many years. Mills and Vega are heading to state for the first time.
