GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” A train that derailed Saturday 260 miles east of Reno, Nev., and also caused a bridge over the Humboldt River to collapse, won’t affect the Zephyr.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr route, which runs from Chicago to Emeryville, Calif., is one of the most traveled east-west routes and makes a stop in Glenwood Springs. Glenwood Springs had 32,697 departures and arrivals in 2007, the second busiest Amtrak train depot in the state behind Denver.

Vernae Graham, an Amtrak spokeswoman in Oakland, Calif., said the derailment won’t affect the Zephyr scheduling at all.

“We are not affected because that is where the track splits, so we are just using another track,” Graham said.

Graham said there is another track that runs parallel to the damaged rail that Amtrak is using as a detour for the Zephyr route. However, she did not say how far south the other line was, and she could not speculate on how long the detour would be in effect.

The Associated Press reported that 13 train cars carrying grain were involved in the derailment.

The train derailed while in a 875-foot tunnel. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
