Dismayed that district attorney is prosecuting animal shelter

Chandler Roth

Dear Editor,

I feel I must express my concern over the decision of the Garfield County authorities to prosecute CARE in a criminal action.

CARE is a nonprofit animal shelter that handles almost all of Garfield County’s neglected or abandoned animals. It seems clear from the article published Nov. 7 that Mr. Steve Smith of the Elk Springs subdivision is determined to sue CARE and to shut it down.

I am very upset as a taxpayer that the district attorney’s office chose to use my tax dollars to prosecute this case.

Mr. Smith used my tax dollars to raise his complaints, not paying a single dime of his own money, while CARE was required to use $10,000 to defend itself against a frivolous criminal complaint.

It is of concern to me that our police would issue this citation, and that the DA’s office would waste our tax money to prosecute it.

I think it is shameful that Garfield County would participate in this effort to shut down a nonprofit organization that is taking on a responsibility that should be borne by the county.

CARE was created because there was no humane, decent place to keep the mistreated and unwanted pets of Garfield County residents. It disgusts me that now Garfield County seems to be doing its best to harass and even destroy this excellent facility.

The hard-working employees of CARE, the multitudes of volunteers, and mostly the once-unloved homeless cats and dogs of this valley deserve better.
