Distance between thinking and reality slows things down

Dear Editor,

I just completed a drive over the newly opened section of Snowmass Canyon. It is the final section that makes the Glenwood to Aspen highway continuous. This is a process that began in Glenwood in 1961 with the removal of the poplars along Grand Avenue and its four-laning.

In 1919, President Eisenhower led the first transcontinental motorcade across the United States. When he retired from office in 1961, America’s interstate highway system was close to completion. So, it took residents of this valley as long to agree on and implement a four-lane highway from Glenwood to Aspen as it took the national government to go from coast to coast.

It’s a discontinuity between thinking and reality that keeps things slowed down. Here in Colorado, we are restricted by mountains, yet their pristine beauty begs to be captured by all who visit. “If only this land could be left untouched for me to enjoy.” This romantic attitude has many “snapshots” of what we want to keep.

In the meantime, the reality of living goes on. Over this time, we’ve had to wait for protesters to wear out, money to be funneled in, and the Aspen/Glenwood dynamic to change. This should all be facilitated in the future when Hispanic culture is integrated into the valley. May we accept and deal with new impacts proactively. This will make a better valley for all while preserving the integrity of what’s already here.
