District 16 sees new faces as the new school year begins
Students and staff in Garfield County School District No. 16 hit the ground running as classes resumed on Aug. 24. The first two weeks of school are always a hectic time as everyone settles into their new routine. That transition has gone smoothly, and students are well on their way to another successful school year.District 16 welcomed 12 new teachers for the 2004-05 school year. Joining the staff at Grand Valley High School are: Scott Carpenter, math; Jason Arthur, math; Beret Brenckman, language arts; Dellitt Wilson, foreign language. Joining the staff at Bea Underwood Elementary are: Jennifer Johnson, third grade; Rachal Danford, third grade; Cheryl Carpenter, third grade; Manila Wise, fourth grade; Kelly Foster, fourth grade; Stephanie Helm, fourth grade; and Liisa Rigg, special education. Barbara Wright joined the staff as district nurse.Other changes that students encountered included a change in building administrators. Former Bea Underwood principal Larry Brady is now the principal at Grand Valley High School. Corey Doss, former assistant principal at Bea Underwood, has taken over the helm at Bea Underwood, and Desha Bierbaum has moved into the assistant principal role. Students may have also found the hallways to be a bit more crowded as early numbers show that enrollment districtwide is 1,035, up from 966. Grand Valley High School has seen the biggest jump, with an enrollment of 265.CongratulationsGrand Valley High School 2004 graduate Chris Johnson competed at the National Future Business Leaders of America Leadership (FBLA) Conference in Denver in July. He placed third at nationals in sports marketing. Johnson had qualified for nationals after placing second in international business at the state FBLA conference in Vail last April.
