Ditch fire destroys outbuilding

RIFLE – An out-of-control ditch fire destroyed an outbuilding at a ranch north of Rifle early Thursday afternoon. The fire occurred at property owned by John Powers at 1044 County Road 325 about a mile north of Highway 13, said Rob Jones, a firefighter with the Rifle Fire Protection District.”There were some people out there burning the ditches, and it got a little too close to the structure,” Jones said. The renters of the property had been doing the burning and thought the fire had gone out, he said.”They left to do some errands, and when they came back we were there,” he said.He said it probably took only about five minutes to put out the building blaze, but crews took longer dousing some cottonwood trees that also had caught fire.No one was injured in the incident. Jones said a damage estimate wasn’t available, but the structure didn’t appear to have had much inside. One fire engine, tender and brush truck and eight firefighters responded, along with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Jones said.
