Carol Dodo didn’t know she was in line for an honor until she began wondering why so many relatives were attending a Colorado Cattlemen/Cattlewomen’s Association convention in Colorado Springs.

Once the group arrived at the Nov. 20 event, she found out.

“It was a big surprise,” Dodo said.

The surprise was that Dodo, who has been part of a family-run cattle ranching operation outside New Castle for 40 years, was about to receive the association’s award for Colorado Cattlewoman of the Year.

“They actually told me a few hours before, but I had no clue I was getting it before,” Dodo said. “My husband and grandkids showed up, and they finally had to tell me why they came.”

According to Dodo’s stepdaughter, Sara Dodero, Dodo deserved the award.

“She spent so many years on the board helping out, and she’s been a big part of the organization,” Dodero said.

Dodo operates what’s known as a cow-calf operation at West Elk Ranch north of New Castle. She joined the association a month after getting married and has been a rancher ever since.

“It’s just our lifestyle, and it’s what we do, and it’s great getting the award,” Dodo said.

In addition to being an important member of the board, Dodo has also promoted the beef industry and educated people about the benefits of eating beef ” “not only how to cook the meat, but the industry itself,” she said.

Dodero said that although the number of ranching operations is dwindling, raising cattle is a rewarding profession.

“It’s a good life ” and beef prices are up.”
