Donald A. Backes, 72, died May 9, 2005, in Parachute.He was born May 19, 1932, to Lawrence A. and Mary Backes, in Peoria, Ill. He graduated from Manual Training High School in Peoria.Donald was a steamfitter for Southern California Pipe Trades.He married his wife, Joy, at Morro Bay, Calif., in June of 1976.Donald loved to go hunting and fishing. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1345, of Rifle, and the 409 Steamfitters Union, in California.Survivors include his wife, Joy B. Bakes, of Parachute; sons Donald A. (Nancy) Backes Jr., of Cobb, Calif., Mark A. (Katherine) Backes, of Morro Bay, and Bari (Jeannie) Jones, of Oakhurst, Calif.; daughters Rhonda Norelius, of Los Osos, Calif., Janet (John Moore) Macri, of Morro Bay, and Sherri (Earl) Foster, of Montana; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special friends Joe and Emily Varanai, of Rifle.He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rifle. Father Robert Hehn of St. Mary Catholic Church will officiate.Rifle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army of the Moosehead Fund at the Rifle Moose Lodge 1345 in Rifle.
