Donald Lee Kriz
Donald Lee Kriz of Glenwood Springs died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at his home. He was 75.
He was born June 7, 1929, in Seward, Neb., to Marie Dvorak Kriz and Louis Lad Kriz. He graduated from Seward High School in June 1945 and joined the U.S. Navy the next day. He served 13 months in the Philippines before being discharged in 1946.
Mr. Kriz worked on highway construction, soil conservation and farmed with his dad and brother until moving to Greeley in 1956, where he worked for Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment Co.
In 1965, he and his brother started Mountain Mobile Mix, a ready-mix concrete company in Frisco, expanding it over the next 18 years to cover eight counties in western Colorado, with headquarters in Glenwood Springs in 1979. The company became a leader in concrete technology and techniques recognized in trade journals and advertisements over many years. The company poured the first concrete for the Eisenhower Tunnel on Interstate 70 and for major ski areas in Colorado and Big Sky, Mont.
In 1982 when the company sold, Mr. Kriz retired, dividing his time between Arizona and Colorado.
He was extremely generous, helping many young people with their college tuitions, their first home or starting a business. He helped raise money for Garfield Youth Services’ annual Kiss-A-Pig fund-raiser for several years.
He is survived by a sister, Evelyn Kriz, and a brother, Ken Kriz, both of Glenwood Springs, and by many friends from Nebraska to Arizona.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, at Mountain View Baptist Church, south of Glenwood Springs, with the Rev. Dave Pearson officiating. He will be buried in Seward, Neb., beside his mother and father, at a later date.
Farnum Holt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to Roaring Fork Hospice, Box 1970, Glenwood Springs, CO 81602.
