Downtown Glenwood losing its luster

Dear Editor,

While the city is spending a lot of time and energy on yet another fancy golf course scheme to be financed with exotic long-term debt, our beautiful downtown area is losing its luster! To wit:

Wing street continues to be a traffic bottleneck. This closing will revitalize downtown by offering dining and shopping opportunities in a casual, relaxed setting rather than in the current traffic melee.

With the recent forced closing of the Feral Book Cafe, downtown has lost an excellent and creative venue for Glenwood’s young and old alike for social interaction, music and games in an alcohol-free environment.

Just one block south on Cooper, the site of the former City Hall now is a dusty, sand-covered parking lot. I sincerely hope the city has funding in place to promptly start the approved redevelopment of this site.

Real estate agents listing downtown properties should be required to maintain landscaping and appearance. The state of neglect of the Hilton White Piano Store and the old police station on Blake Avenue is appalling!

Finally the uniforms of our police. We have a fine and professional police force. Do they really need these intimidating black SWAT-team uniforms? True, in certain crime scenarios police must exude authority. However, in their general role of peacekeepers, these uniforms convey an unduly confrontational image. When cops are on downtown and neighborhood beats, a more casual attire is appropriate.

Sincerely,

Gerry Vanderbeek
