Driver critical after wreck

A Grand Junction woman was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital from Glenwood Springs on Sunday after she and three other passengers were involved in a single-car rollover accident.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 about two miles east of New Castle.

Dawn Apodaca, 19, was driving a 1982 Honda Civic east on I-70 when she lost control. The car veered into the median and rolled once, a Colorado State Patrol news release said.

During the rollover, Apodaca was thrown from the car and landed on the north shoulder of the highway’s westbound lane.

The three other passengers, none of whom were identified, were treated and released from Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, the news release said.

After the accident, Apodaca was taken to Valley View Hospital, but she soon was airlifted to St. Mary’s because of the severity of her injuries.

The specific nature of Apodaca’s injuries were not reported by the Colorado State Patrol.

Apodaca was listed in critical condition on Monday afternoon by St. Mary’s Hospital administrators.
