A one-car rollover accident on Independence Pass early Friday morning killed one passenger and sent five others to the hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet Safari van, Jesus G. Chiarez-Garcia, 32, fled the scene of the accident. As of Saturday afternoon, he was still at large.

The accident took place at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Highway 82 between the Lost Man and Lincoln Creek campgrounds. Chiarez-Garcia was westbound when he lost control of the vehicle and skidded off the left side of the road where the van rolled one and a half times, ejecting Gariel Luevano, 18, and Miguel Arias, 22, before coming to final rest on its top facing south. The two men were transported to the Texaco in Aspen, where Luevano was pronounced dead by Aspen Ambulance paramedics. Arias was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, where he remains in stable condition.

The three other passengers – Leonel Chayrez, 32; Rigoberto Luevano Arias, 28; and Marcos Salazar, 36 – were all transported to Aspen Valley Hospital where they were treated and released.

All the men involved in the accident have been living in the Leadville area.

The Colorado State Patrol is still investigating the crash. Chiarez-Garcia is a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information regarding where to locate Jesus G. Chiarez-Garcia is asked to contact the Colorado State Patrol at (970) 824-6501.
