Eagle County deputy survives rear-end crash

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” Eagle County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Porter is lucky to be alive after a passing motorist did not yield to his emergency lights and struck the back of his stationary patrol vehicle.

The accident occurred on Dec. 16 at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 70 westbound near Wilmore Lake. Porter was assisting a motorist off the shoulder on the right side of the road. The impact from the other vehicle catapulted the patrol vehicle into the eastbound lanes of I-70, with Porter still inside, where there was oncoming traffic. The deputy was treated and released from the hospital, but has not yet returned to work.

The Colorado Move over Law requires motorists to slow down, merge to the lane farthest away from stopped emergency vehicles with lights flashing, and proceed with caution. Unfortunately motorists are still forgetting to slow down and move over. In 2007, 49 officers died in the line of duty as a result of automobile accidents, and 12 officers were struck by vehicles, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Drivers that are cited for violating the state law will receive a citation that includes a fine plus 4 points against the violator’s Colorado driver’s license.
