Election 2010 Endorsement: Vote no on marijuana ballot questions

Post Independent
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Voters in Garfield County should vote “no” on three ballot measures asking to define what type of medical marijuana operations should be allowed in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The questions, 1A, 1B and 1C, ask voters to prohibit anyone from growing, selling or making “infused products” [edibles that offer an alternative to smoking] from medical marijuana.

While many see a “Yes” vote as instantly decreasing crime and the incidence of marijuana use among our young, we see no chance in doing either of these if marijuana remains a black market item.

There is no evidence showing that crime increases with the legalization of medical marijuana.

Passage of these questions would put local sheriff’s deputies in direct conflict with the majority wishes of Garfield County – in 2000, county residents voted for legalization of medical marijuana by a margin of 9,131 to 7,572.

A “no” vote is prudent for two main reasons: It allows law enforcement and citizens a chance to understand exactly what the state legislature has accomplished in an effort to codify the matter; and it allows greater local control of the industry as a legal, and taxable business.
