GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. ” Whether it’s eating worms, camping on a school rooftop in freezing temperatures or guarding the hockey goal while students take shots, Roaring Fork School District Re-1 Principals have shown creativity in finding zany ideas to help prod students towards educational goals.

Glenwood Springs Elementary School Principal Sonya Hemmen suited up in goalie gear and took to the net Friday afternoon in the GSES gym as her students rained shot after shot upon her. For February, the “I Love Reading” month, GSES students were challenged to meet their reading goals. Those who did were rewarded with a bookmark and the opportunity to shoot on Hemmen. If they scored, they then got to pick out a book to keep, and their book reports were entered into a random drawing. Whoever won the drawing was to get hockey tickets. Some students completed multiple reports to increase their odds, GSES Librarian Pam Lewis said.

Fourth-grader Elijah Padilla scored on Hemmen and subsequently won four tickets to see the Colorado Avalanche play the Minnesota Wild on March 31 at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Lewis had contacted the Avalanche and convinced them to donate the tickets for the cause, Assistant Principal Ted Donahue said.

One student reportedly said in amazement of the free book, “We get to keep the book forever?”
