Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Paterson

Elizabeth “Bessie” Paterson, 85, of Rifle, passed away Dec. 17, 2008 at E. Dene Moore Care Center.

Bessie was born November 8, 1923, in Scotland, to Robert and Mary (Gallaher) Moffat.

She married David Paterson in 1946, in Grangemouth, Scotland. They immigrated to Canada in 1967 and then moved to Sunnyside, Utah in 1972. They both became citizens of the Unites States in 1978. They moved to Rifle in 2004 to be closer to family.



Bessie enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, gardening, arts and crafts and spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rifle since 2004.

Mrs. Paterson is survived by her loving husband; daughters Mary Coyle of Scotland, Dorothy (Ian) Fearon of Colorado; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to the charity of your choice in Bessie’s name.

A viewing is planned for 9 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rifle, with a mass of Christian burial immediately following at 10 a.m.; after which she will be going home to Scotland for burial.

Rifle Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
