Empty Bowl fundraiser to fill stomachs today

Enjoying a bowl of soup with friends and family not only fills the stomach and provides one-of-a-kind pottery to take home, it also helps feed and transport the community’s seniors.

The Empty Bowl, Colorado Mountain College’s Senior Program’s annual fundraiser to support the Senior Meal Programs, The Traveler Senior Transportation Program and High Country Retired Senior Volunteer Program, takes place from 4-7 p.m. today.

Potters have donated more than 200 handmade bowls and mugs for diners to take home. The 8th St. Deli, Shane Egan (aka “The Soup Guy”) and Rifle’s Senior Center are each donating five gallons of soup or chili. RSVP volunteers will make bread and Senior Programs volunteers will serve the food.

The smorgasbord will be held at the Lucy Huntley Senior Center at CMC’s Glenwood Center, 1402 Blake Ave. Pianist Walt Smith will provide soft jazz dinner music. Along with the soup and bread, dessert and a beverage are included with the ticket price.

“People who buy tickets can choose any bowl they want,” Stewart said. “They take it to the kitchen, where it’s washed. Then they can fill it with any soup they want. And at the end of the meal, they get to take home their keepsake bowl, as a reminder that they helped out someone else.”

Because of cuts in state and federal spending, coupled with rising fuel costs, programs for seniors could use support, said Stewart. Donations made that evening are also welcome.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For tickets, call CMC Senior Programs in Glenwood Springs at 945-9115, or in Rifle at 625-1366.
