EnCana wrapping up second leg of pipeline

EnCana Oil and Gas, which operates nearly 600 natural gas wells in western Garfield County, is finishing construction on the second leg of a 25-mile, 24-inch natural gas pipeline. We plan to have it completed Jan. 10, said EnCana spokesperson Sher Long. The second part of the project covers 15 miles, and runs from the companys compressor facility west of Rifle to 1.5 miles north of Parachute. The gas delivered by the pipeline will be sold to Qwestar, Williams Pipeline and CIG, Long said. The pipeline runs parallel to Highway 6 & 24 through public and private lands at a minimum depth of 48 inches.Earlier this year, the company completed a 10-mile, 24-inch pipeline that runs from Flat Iron Mesa south of Rifle to the companys compressor facility west of Rifle. This is a continuation of that pipeline, said Garfield County planner Mark Bean. The Garfield County Commissioners hold a public hearing on EnCanas special use permit application for the second of the two pipelines at 1:15 p.m., Monday, Jan. 19. EnCana pipeline consultant Jimmy Smith said the company decided to start construction on the 15-mile pipeline last September while Garfield County worked on defining pipelines in its zoning code. The current regulations are extremely vague, Smith said. It was the interpretation of the company that it was okay for us to go forward. The commissioners will also discuss pipeline definitions for its zoning code at the Jan. 19 meeting.Contact Lynn Burton: 945-8515, ext. 534lburton@postindependent.com
