English education panders to illegal immigrants

Marty Lich

Dear Editor,

I read three recent letters to the editor: “Driver’s licenses for illegals is nuts,” “Foreigners take advantage of U.S.,” and “Parents should pay for all their children’s costs.”

And I have two comments: To legally immigrate to the United States, a person must be fluent in English, yet in March 2002, President Bush appointed Hernandez Ferrier as the head of the Office of English Language Acquisition. Her work consisted of supervising the distribution of funds aimed at students who do not speak English.

According to the Department of Education, so far this year there has been a 50 percent increase in such funds under the new “No child left behind” law, reaching $665 million. So apparently this is more vote-pandering as legal immigrants do not need English acquisition classes, only illegal immigrant students do.

And point No. 2, Mexico’s President Sly-like-a-Fox better start keeping his nose on his side of the border fence. What he does in Mexico is his business. Our president better start concerning himself with American legal residents on this side of the border fence.

What we do on our side of the fence in America is our business and does not involve Fox whatsoever. Bush would be well-advised to remember that.

Sincerely,

Marty Lich
