Local eats: Juicy Lucy’s Steakhouse
April 20, 2016
Glenwood Springs' Seventh Street has become the city's "restaurant row," and one of the favorite stops is Juicy Lucy's Steakhouse, 308 Seventh St.
Owner Cece Zumwinkle sat down with me to talk about the restaurant's most popular offerings, what kind of dining experience patrons can expect and what sets the restaurant apart.
Jessica Cabe: When and why did you start the restaurant?
Cece Zumwinkle: We started it in 1999 because we're restaurant people. We've had four restaurants, and we were ready to do it again.
JC: What style is your menu?
CZ: It's a classic steakhouse — steak and seafood.

JC: What's your most popular dish?
CZ: We sell a lot of fresh fish because it's really outstanding, and the New York steaks and the ribeye steaks are probably up there with our most popular dishes. But we have a very large menu, so it's hard to say. Caesar salads are popular, our Seventh Street, however, is probably the most popular salad. It is a spring mix with strawberries and candied walnuts and Gorgonzola, and it's just delicious. People love it. We have a great wine list, and the wine goes with our food, and we have a wonderful happy hour.
JC: What's a dish you think everyone should try?
CZ: That's a tough one. I would say certainly an appetizer, a salad, an entree and a dessert. The elk in fillo is unusual and delicious, the Brie-stuffed mushrooms — it's tough for me. I'm quite a fish eater, so I'd say you've got to try some of our fish because you're not going to believe how good it is in the middle of the country. We're very proud of our meat, as well; it's fresh, it's cut in-house. Come back, try everything.
JC: What kind if dining experience do you offer? Is it ideal for families, couples, etc.?
CZ: All of the above, really. We love families. We've also had a number of people celebrate their weddings here. We consider ourselves fine dining even though we're technically not — we don't have a tablecloth, but we think we can appeal to everybody.
JC: Tell me about the live music you have here.
CZ: We have it every week in the summer because it's above the waterfall on our patio. It's weather-permitting, and we've been doing it Saturday noon to 3, Sunday noon to 3, and Monday and Tuesday 6 to 9. We'll have a gal play Thursday night just because.
JC: Do people take advantage of your rooftop dining option?
CZ: It's very popular in the summer.
JC: Tell me about your bar.
CZ: We have a very extensive bar, beer menu, cocktails, so it's kind of fun. We can make pretty much anything. And we have a Wine Spectator Award-winning wine list. We've gotten the award for many years running now.
JC: Is there anything else newcomers should know about Juicy Lucy's?
CZ: I should say we also pride ourselves on our service: friendly and professional.
