Western Garfield County is steadily growing, and Silt and Rifle are becoming stops that are just as mandatory as any towns in the Roaring Fork Valley. It was really nice to interview Christian Harra, owner of Miner’s Claim, who used to work for celebrities in Aspen and decided to take a chance on something he envisioned would be great in Silt.

Susie Jimenez: What is mountain cuisine for you?

Christian Harra (owner): It’s a vibe and feel of the restaurant, not necessarily a cuisine. We have wild game, seafood and steaks that are experienced in a 1927 log cabin with the largest patio and fireplace in the valley.

SJ: What do you find is a success with Miner’s Claim?

CH: That I’m hands-on, and I lead by example. I like to get down and dirty in the kitchen, but you will find me bartending most of the time because I do squeeze all my juices, make my own mixes and like to oversee what’s happening.

SJ: Chef Oscar has been with you for a long time. What’s the secret to keeping him around?

CH: We have been together for over 17 years. He started as a line cook, then took over the restaurant as executive in 2004 and sees my vision with his vision.

SJ: Why Silt?

CH: I own my own property and the restaurant, and I wanted to have something I can turn into my own. I built it myself and now have over 16 years here. I see the growth in Silt and what it’s still becoming. There’s support and great things that keep happening.

SJ: What kind of specials do you have, and what’s unique about you?

CH: We make over 240 martinis on Tuesdays because it’s 2-for-1 with fresh juices. We have specials every day you can check out on our website (theminersclaim.com). We also offer small plates you can share with your friends when you arrive so you can try the different flavors we have. Everything is delicious, and there’s definitely a bite for everyone.
