CARBONDALE, Colorado – There’s a better way to get around Carbondale than the car, and this whole week is set aside to draw attention to and encourage it.

Bonedale Bike Week, held in conjunction with National Bike to Work Week, takes place Monday through Friday, May 17-21, with a series of events and prize give-aways.

“This is the third year we’ve done this,” said organizer Rhonda Roberts, noting that CRMS teacher Tracy Wilson started a similar bike week in Idaho and brought the idea to Carbondale with her.

“I jumped on board last year, because it’s just a great week of great events, and it’s become really popular,” she said. “The idea is to try to get as many people in Carbondale out on their bikes as possible, and help them realize that the best way to get around Carbondale is on a bike.”

There will be a variety of special events, including group rides, scavenger hunts, parties and an outdoor movie showing of “Pee Wee Herman’s Big Adventure” on Monday night in downtown Carbondale.

All events are free, and many will be offering complimentary food and beverages. However, donations to support the event and related bicycling promotions will be encouraged.

“We have four or five bicycles to give away, including an Extra Cycle cargo bike,” Roberts said. “We’re going to try to give away one bike per night.

“It’s just a great time of year, too,” she said. “People are shedding their winter gear and thoughts, and getting out on their bikes.”

Roberts notes that, on an individual level, the bicycle offers mental, spiritual and physical fitness, “all while getting you where you need to go,” she said. “Bikes make us better, and they make our world a better place for our better selves to live, and ride.”
