GLENWOOD SPRINGS – For more than a decade, ice skating has brought the community of Glenwood Springs closer.Tonight, the Glenwood Springs Community Center is hosting its annual Family Skate Night. It’s an evening that’s proved successful in the past.”It was snowing like blazes last year, but we still had about 300 people come out,” said the Glenwood Springs Police Department’s community service specialist, Margaret Wierenga. “I was kind of surprised, but it’s a big deal, it’s become a tradition to do this for the community.”The event is a collaboration between the Community Center, the GSPD and YouthZone, Wierenga said. Wierenga is the event coordinator for the police department, and she said the event has been ongoing for more than a decade.”Oh gosh, it’s been going for a long time,” she said. “Ten or 12 years. We used to do it at the old rodeo grounds and would just flood the arena with water.”Admission is free to the public, and the GSPD will supply skates for all kids 13 and younger. Skate rentals will be $2 for those 14 and older.Pastor Dan Rose of the Pioneer Faith Community Church in Glenwood Springs will be helping cook chili to keep folks warm through the event. Hot cocoa and hot dogs will also be provided at no charge during the event, which runs from 6:15 to 8 p.m.It’s activities like these that he looks forward to.”I always want to help with these events,” Rose said.Just remember to drive safely to and from the event and the fun will be taken care of.Contact John Gardner: 384-9114jgardner@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs, Colorado CO
