Famous 77-year-old pianist to play Summer of Jazz in Glenwood

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” When Ahmad Jamal was three, his uncle challenged him to duplicate what he was playing on the piano.

That’s fate for you.

Jamal, 77, grew into one talented, famous pianist, to say the least. One of Miles Davis’ favorite piano players, he’s performed and recorded since the early 1950s. Over the years, his style has swayed and changed but has always retained the intense, percussion sensibility that made him famous.

Since the 1980s, he’s been touring regularly, hitting up major festivals and clubs throughout the US and Europe.

Thanks to the Summer of Jazz, he’ll be heading Glenwood’s way Wednesday.

For the full scoop on Jamal, wait for Wednesday’s paper.
