Famous Footwear coming to Glenwood

Ryan Graff

Famous Footwear is bringing optimism and controversy to Glenwood Springs. Famous Footwear, with 920 stores throughout the country, will open a new location in the Glenwood Springs Mall in mid-July, said Deb Jacupke, CEO of Glenwood Springs Mall. One in 10 families shops at Famous Footwear for back-to-school each year, according to the company’s Web site. That kind of popularity has at least some local shoe sellers worried. “I don’t think it’s such a hot idea,” said Jan Haines, owner of Dragon’s Boot & Shoe in the mall. “It’s already going to be hard with (Glenwood Meadows) across the street, and now this stuff’s going on,” she said. “I don’t think it’s going to hit the high end (market), but I think it’s going to hurt,” she said. “Not because of my store, but because of everybody else, too.”Mall management, however, takes a different view. “Famous Footwear fits the mall’s niche very nicely,” Jacupke said. “It’ll bring more attention to shoes in general.”That logic has taken hold among other mall shoe sellers as well. “At first we were concerned, but after thinking about it and looking at what they sell, we think we’ll just adjust our inventory a little bit,” said Joan Schettig, owner of Performance Footwear. Performance Footwear, which already carries high-end shoes, plans to focus even more on the high end. By Monday the store had already made some adjustments with a shipment of Pearl Izumi, a new high-end brand, Schettig said. “Hopefully, the big-name store will just increase mall traffic,” she said.
