Festival a cultural event for the whole family

The 1st annual Festival Las Americas, celebrating the values of all the different cultures of the American continent in an environment of healthy camaraderie, comes to Sopris Park, Carbondale, Saturday, Aug. 23, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Activities include live music and performances, kids entertainment, food, crafts and more. There will be a variety of food vendors representing the different tastes of Central and South America. Stage acts include tango and salsa presentations and an opportunity to learn these interesting and ever-popular dance genres, a gypsy dance performance, drumming presentations, a tropical music band and much more.

For the young ones there will be a climbing wall and bouncy castle. In addition YouthZone will sponsor the first soccer dribbling and kicking competition.

The general population of the Roaring Fork Valley has been sharply increasing during the last decade, most notably among the Latino immigrant community.

The Latino population in the Roaring Fork is growing and settling down. But the Anglo and Latino populations are still living largely in separate worlds. Education and knowledge of foreign folklore will help overcome obstacles and foster better relationships among the regional population.

To learn to coexist, to share the values of each culture is a very important aspect of harmonious community development and is a way of eliminating barriers and misunderstandings. This is the aim of a group of local nonprofits who have organized the festival.

The former Latino Festival of the Mountains was an activity celebrated for many years but was canceled two years ago. Festival Las Americas takes up where it left off.
