Fire away: Shooting range OK’d

The Garfield County Commissioners approved a special use permit Monday for a private shooting range on County Road 200 northwest of De Beque.

The shooting range will occupy 1.5 acres of the 13,000-acre High Lonesome Lodge, according to the special use permit application filed by Gene Hilton and Buzz Cox.

The range will be a mobile, five-stand shooting platform for a sporting clay range, and a 300-yard sight-in range for rifles. It will be located approximately 100 feet off County Road 200, and the shooting direction will be in a north/northeast direction, away from the road.

Acting on staff recommendations, the commissioners attached seven conditions to the special use permit, including a ban on alcoholic beverages.

The High County Lodge must also install signs on County Road 200 to inform motorists they are approaching a shooting range. Red flags must also be displayed at the range when it is in use.

The shooting range is for High Lonesome Lodge clients, but might be used for Colorado Division of Wildlife hunter safety courses, according to a staff report.

In other business from Monday’s Garfield County Commission meeting, the commissioners approved a $77,000 contract with Western Petroleum for bulk motor fuel for 2004. Master Petroleum, with a bid of $79,000, was the only other bidder.
