Fire burns 5 acres near Parachute

Several fire agencies spent Friday controlling a brush fire, which may have started due to human actions, off of County Road 306 in the Parachute area.

The fire started on top of the Spring Creek Mesa around noon, said David Blair, fire chief with Grand Valley Fire Protection District.

Blair said the cause of the fire is being investigated as possibly caused by a person. Additional details were not available.

Crews had the fire, which spread to about 5 acres, mostly contained before 5 p.m. Friday. Several airdrops were called in early on to slow the fire’s growth.

“At this time we’ve got it pretty much knocked down to a few smoldering trees,” Blair said, adding crews would likely work through the evening to have the fire completely extinguished by Saturday.

Terrain also helped control the fire.

While it started on top of the Mesa, the wind directed it down the side of the mesa, where “it lost a lot of steam” due to a limited presence of flame-friendly fuels.

“Local terrain helped us a bunch,” Blair said.

Aside from GVFPD, other responding agencies included the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado River Fire Protection District, Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District, Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit and the De Beque Fire Protection District.
