RIFLE ” About 32 people are displaced after fire ravaged a Rimrock Apartments building in north Rifle today.

Witnesses say a couch outside of the building caught fire and ignited the rest of the building. Authorities say initial investigation determined that the fire is “suspicious in nature.”

The fire started at 4:06 p.m. Rifle firefighters were on the scene within two minutes, according to a press release from the Rifle Police. Rifle Fire fought an earlier brush fire near the corner of Whiteriver and 16th Street, which dispatch described as a controlled burn that went out of control.

Firefighters used hand lines to extinguish flames, entered the upper level to evacuate the building and were evacuated themselves within 20 minutes after their arrival for safety reasons.

The fire was contained by 5:40 p.m. Rifle Fire received help from the Glenwood Springs Fire Department and Grand Valley Fire Protection District as well as the Garfield County Sheriff’s Department and Rifle Police.
