Fire-related drilling restrictions enacted

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has enacted several fire bans on oil and gas drilling rigs and pipeline construction throughout the state.

“Colorado oil and gas operators are being vigilant in their attention to the current fire dangers,” said Greg Walcher, department of natural resources executive director. “Together with state regulators, they are working with local emergency response teams to help prevent fires, and protect our state during this extreme fire danger.”

The restrictions encompass several levels of activity, including welding, pipefitting, metal grinding and torch operations, plus flaring operations and smoking.

“The restrictions require advance notification of state regulators before any such operation that could cause fires,” said Rich Griebling, oil and gas commission director.

Griebling said the restrictions are necessary not only to prevent employees at oil and gas activity sites, but also to protect the health, safety and welfare of Colorado citizens.

“It has become very clear over the past few weeks that you cannot be too careful when it comes to fire prevention,” Griebling said. “I am very proud of the preventative measures that oil and gas personnel are taking in this effort to combat current and future fires.”

The Oil and Gas Commission’s measures coincide with similar federal restrictions recently announced by the Bureau of Land Management.
