Firefighters battle small Silt Mesa blaze

Firefighters responded to a fire on private land on Silt Mesa Tuesday afternoon. By Tuesday night the fire was estimated to be about 1 acre, according to David Boyd, BLM Public Information Officer.

Though there are structures in the area, none were immediately threatened, Boyd said. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters worked on the fire into the night. “They expect to have it controlled [Tuesday night],” Boyd said.

A helicopter, two local engines, two federal engines and about 8 local firefighters responded to the fire. The helicopter made several successful bucket drops, Boyd said.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause. As there hasn’t been lightning in several days, investigators expect the fire was caused by humans, Boyd said.

Boyd added that with this early start to the fire season, “People need to be really careful out there. It’s only going to get worse as the summer progresses.”
