Firemen waste no time trashing blaze

A fire broke out in the BFI Waste Services garage Friday night, destroying a pickup and causing significant heat and smoke damage to the building, according to a press release from the Glenwood Springs Fire Department.

Upon entering the garage, firefighters from Glenwood Springs and Carbondale faced heavy smoke and intense heat. Ventilation was provided by cutting sections of the garage door to allow air flow.

Many large tires were burning in the garage, but firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with hand lines.

In addition to the destroyed pickup, the garage housed eight to 12 full-size trash trucks. All were somewhat damaged by heavy smoke from the burning tires, but none burned.

The building, a steel structure, received fire damage near the source of the fire in addition to heat and smoke damage throughout. However, the building appears to be structurally sound.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
