First annual Colorado Draft Horse Classic Aug. 30, 31 at fairgrounds

The first annual Colorado Draft Horse Classic and Fine Craftsman Festival is coming to the Garfield County Fairgrounds Aug. 30 and 31.

The show is sponsored by Silt Revitalization Inc. and the Western Slope Driving Chapter of the Colorado Draft Horse Association.

Spectators will see the gentle giants compete in a variety of classes from single carts to six-horse hitches to farm teams. Draft horses will also pit their strength in a traditional weight-pulling contest.

The competition is 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, continues from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.

Admission to the show is $5 each day and includes parking. Children under 12 are admitted free.

The Garfield County Fairgrounds are located at 1001 Railroad Ave. in Rifle.

In January 2002 the Silt Revitalization Committee was formed by residents and business people interested in historical preservation and the development of healthy, sustainable, locally owned businesses in the town of Silt.

The Colorado Draft Horse Classic is the first special event produced by the committee.

Working in conjunction with the Western Slope Driving Chapter of the Colorado Draft Horse Association and the Chambers of Commerce of Battlement Mesa/Parachute, Rifle, Silt, New Castle and Glenwood Springs, it was decided that a working draft horse show would be fun and provide a focal point by which to showcase local businesses.
