Flora F. Valdez

Former Delta County resident, Flora F. Valdez, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her residence in Carbondale. She was 86 years old.
Flora F. Cruz was born to Leandro and Rafalita (Sandoval) Cruz on July 8, 1923 in Lumberton, N.M. She spent her childhood and attended schools in Lumberton.
On July 15, 1940, Flora married Thomas Valdez in Lumberton, N.M. To this union, four children were born. The Valdez family resided in New Mexico and East Carbon City, Utah for several years before making their home in Delta County in 1965. Flora and Tom had the honor and privilege of sharing over 67 years of love and marriage together. Tom passed away on Nov. 9, 2007 in Denver.
Flora, a loving wife and devoted mother, enjoyed gambling, playing bingo and she loved to go fishing with her family and friends. She also enjoyed quilting for her new grandbabies.
Flora was a member of the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Glenwood Springs; a longtime member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta; Guadalupana and Altar Rosary Societies; and a former member of the Delta Elks Lodge.
Flora is preceded in death by her parents, Leandro and Rafalita Cruz; her husband, Thomas Valdez; son-in-law, Leo Meraz; brothers: Lucio Cruz, Ben Cruz, Manuel Cruz, Joe Cruz and Conrad Cruz; and sister, Olivia Tafoya.
Flora is survived by her four children: Bertha (Alvaro) Marquez of Carbondale, Frances Meraz of Glenwood Springs,, Larry (Joy) Valdez of Salt Lake City, Utah and Leonard (Teresa) Valdez of Hotchkiss; brother, Archie Cruz of Arboles; sister, Lupe Valdez of East Carbon City, Utah; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-7p.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
A rosary will be recited following the visitation at 7p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Henry Aguwa presiding. Burial will follow at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Flora’s memory to the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Delta.
