Fourth of July fireworks fizzle

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The city won’t be celebrating Independence Day with fireworks, but a big party is in the works for the 4th of July at the Community Center.

“That decision was made early on, when we didn’t know about the drought situation,” said Mayor Pro-tem Rick Davis at the Thursday City Council meeting.

The city’s annual fireworks display will be postponed until December, as it was last year, to avoid sparking a wildfire.

Meanwhile, the staff of the Community Center is planning a 4th of July bash for residents, including food, games, contests and other fun. Details will be released later in the month.

The Glenwood Springs City Council also canceled its July 3 council meeting.

No one on City Council or city staff wanted to stay up late for a council meeting the night before a holiday weekend, said city manager Mike Copp.

City officials are also planning the annual city picnic for Thursday, Aug. 14, when residents can get a free picnic dinner, meet and visit with council members and city staff, and learn about two important projects.

The evening picnic, to be held in the civic plaza next to City Hall, will be coupled with the police department’s National Night Out, and Colorado Department of Transportation staff will be on hand to explain next year’s Grand Avenue Paving Project, called the GAPP.
