Freida K. Shaeffer
Freida Katherine Shaeffer, of Rifle, Colo., died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, of natural causes, at Crossroads Assisted Living in Rifle. She was 92.
She was born Dec. 21, 1909, in Grand Island, Nebr., to Peter John Benzel and Mary Barbara Bernhardt Benzel. The family left Nebraska and moved to Tacoma, Wash., then moved to Silt, Colo., in 1913. She spent her childhood and went to schools near Silt, graduating from Silt High School in 1930.
She married Jake Shaeffer on Dec. 20, 1931, at Antlers, Colo. They farmed near New Castle, Silt and Rifle. In 1940, they bought a South Rifle farm where they lived until retirement in 1981. They moved to a new home in Rifle and spent several winters in Arizona because of Mr. Shaeffer’s health. They celebrated 54 years of marriage.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting and gardening. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed helping with the Christmas Bazaar and taking neighborhood children to Vacation Bible School. Her other interests were the Hospital Auxiliary, Senior Center and delivering Meals on Wheels. She lived at Crossroads Assisted Living for 3 years where she was active in her twilight years.
She wrote many oral history memories and stories of her family. Through the years she shared many ethnic traditions of her Germans-from-Russia heritage. Most of all, she enjoyed her children and their families who will long remember her loving smile, kindness and generosity.
She was preceded in death by husband Jake; brothers Henry Benzel, Alex Benzel, Karl L. Benzel, and John Benzel; and sisters Pauline Welsh, Clara Hasselbush, Stella Bates and Hannah (Honey) Benzel.
She is survived by daughters and son-in-law Barbara Morris, of Boulder, Colo., and Kay and Bill Rogers, of Lakewood Colo.; son and daughter-in-law Harold and Roberta Shaeffer, of Rifle; grandchildren and their spouses Jana and Jeff Wagner, of Louisville, Colo., Marcia and Jeff Lester, of Broomfield, Colo., Rhonda and Russ Hulslander, of Ault, Colo., Kimberly and Mark Culbertson, of Greenwood Village, Colo., Jake and Dana Shaeffer, of Plymouth, Minn., and Rebecca and Keith Howerton, of San Antonio, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Rifle Funeral Home, 1400 Access Road in Rifle.
Cremation has occurred.
