Galloway at Steve’s Guitars Saturday

Staff Report

Benny “Burl” Galloway’s soulful voice and eloquent songs come to Steve’s Guitars, 19 N. 4th St. in Carbondale Saturday, July 19. Doors open at 8 p.m.. and the show starts at 8:30. Admission is $15 at the door.

Galloway is joined by the lead guitarist of Yonder Mountain String Band, Adam Ajala.

Galloway, of Rico, describes himself as a butcher, plumber, music lover and fly fishing junkie. His big breakthrough came when the Yonder Mountain String Band signed him to compose the songs on their new CD, “Old Hands.”

“It’s a bluegrass album that’s pure and beautiful,” said Paul Rennix on the California Bluegrass Association Web site. “It portrays the content maturity and beauty one would expect in an Alison Kraus album, and an authentic, old time sound that is unmistakable and connected to the roots of yester year.”

Galloway writes about cowboys, miners and ranchhands with a deeply-felt devotion to Western lore.

His singing is as soulful as his lyrics.

“Galloway’s voice is one of those voices that is unmistakably his. It is rich and full of character and his tone paints a picture clear and unforgettable,” Rennix said.

“The words of Benny Galloway could have been written a hundred years ago and had they been we would all know them know. In the years to come these songs are all destined to become classics.”
