Garfield County commissioners face re-election

This is an election year for two of Garfield County’s three county commissioners, the county surveyor, and the district attorney from the 9th Judicial District.

The 2004 general election isn’t until Nov. 2, but election slates could start shaping up as early as the Garfield County precinct caucus day on Tuesday, April 13.

The Democrat and Republican party assemblies will be held between April 23 and May 13, said Garfield County Clerk Mildred Alsdorf.

The primary election is Aug. 10. The primary and general elections are both polling place elections, Alsdorf said.

The Garfield County Commission seats held by John Martin in District 2, central Garfield County, and Larry McCown in District 3, western Garfield County, are up for election in November.

Both of the two-term incumbents, who are Republicans, said Monday they will seek re-election.

Garfield County does not have term limits for county officials, Alsdorf said.

The third county commissioner, Tresi Houpt, a Democrat, is in the second year of a four-year term.

Alsdorf said the county commissioner salary is set by the state Legislature, and is $51,827 per year.

Deputy District Attorney Lawson Wills, a Republican, said he is running run for the district attorney position (see story on page 1).

Garfield County Surveyor Scott Aibner also faces election in November because he was appointed to the position by the county commissioners after no candidate surfaced.

The county surveyor is paid at an hourly rate by the county commissioners, Alsdorf said.
