Garfield County judges endorsed for retention

DENVER, Colorado – The State Commission on Judicial Performance and local judicial district performance commissions have completed their evaluations of 90 judges scheduled to stand for retention in the Nov. 6 election.

The evaluations were posted online Tuesday at . They will also be included in the Blue Book, the voter information booklet that is mailed to every active registered voter household in the state.

In Garfield County, Ninth District Judges James Boyd and Daniel Petre are up for retention votes. Both are recommended for retention by the state commission.

All judges stand for retention election after serving a two-year provisional term. County court judges then stand every four years, district court judges every six years, court of appeals judges every eight years, and Supreme Court justices every 10 years.

“The judicial system and the decisions that judges make impact all our citizens and businesses,” said Steve Briggs, chair of the State Commission on Judicial Performance.

“Colorado’s judicial performance evaluation process is the best way to evaluate a judge’s performance over a period of time based on established criteria and not on the outcome of a particular decision. It is a process in which politics is to play no role.”
