Garfield County Libraries schedule for May 19-25

The Garfield County Libraries have some fun and educational events coming up for summer and the next couple weeks, especially at the New Castle branch library.
All six branches will be closed on Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day and will resume normal hours on Tuesday, May 27. Patrons may still request books, movies and other pieces on the website.
The New Castle branch library will have Take and Make Craft Kits for Adults at the New Castle branch library, available for pick-up during normal library hours while supplies last. For more information, call the New Castle branch library at 970-984-2346.
New Castle’s library will be holding a grand reopening at 10 a.m. on May 28 with a ribbon cutting. This will be followed by three days of fun activities and tours of the new building. That evening at 6 p.m., there will be a showing of the documentary “Free For All: The Public Library”, which tells the stories of quiet revolutionaries who made a simple idea happen.
Intro to Sewing courses for adults are starting at the New Castle branch library to learn the fundamental skills and techniques of sewing, like basic machine operation and fabric handling to simple projects. These courses will be held from 12-1 p.m. on Fridays, May 30 through June 20. This is a free series designed for absolute beginners with little to no prior sewing experience. Space is limited and registration is required. To register or get more information, call the New Castle library at 970-984-2346.
This week, a thoughtful and interactive discussion on aging and end-of-life care will be taking place at the Carbondale branch library at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22. Marie Herr, executive director at Sopris Lodge in Carbondale will be joining a panel of regional care experts to share insight, answer questions and highlight the partnership with HomeCare & Hospice of the Valley in providing compassionate palliative and end-of-life care for residents and families in independent living, assisted living and memory care. This event is free to the public, but an RSVP is requested by calling Chase Corte at 970-456-8764. For more information, call the Carbondale branch library at 970-963-2889.
Laura Goodwin from the Garfield County Senior Program will be at the Silt branch library from 9-10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays from June 3 to July 25, except July 4, for low impact tai chi classes for seniors. Classes are free but space is limited, sign up in advance or for more information call the Silt branch library at 970-625-5282 ext. 3084.
To start off the summer reading challenge, the Garfield County Libraries will be holding splash parties where kids will be able to play games, enjoy snacks and prizes and to sign up for this year’s challenge, “Level Up At Your Library.” The first splash party will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3 at the Glenwood Springs branch library and at 4 p.m. at the Carbondale branch library. The next two parties will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4 at the New Castle branch library and at 1 p.m. at the Silt branch library.
