Garfield County police report

Editor’s note: The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Driving without a valid license: A deputy stopped a motorist for speeding on I-70 near Silt at 9:15 a.m. on Aug. 26. The driver, Sergio Trejo, 24, of Evanston, Wyo., was arrested on suspicion of speeding 10 mph over the limit and driving while his license was revoked for a previous alcohol offense.
Warrant issued: Deputies took a report of a domestic disturbance on Smokey Hill Court in Battlement Mesa at 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 26. A warrant was issued for one of the individuals involved.
Driving under the influence: Deputies stopped a motorist for failing to drive in a single lane on Highway 82 at 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 26. The driver, Daniel Molina-Najera, 34, of Glenwood Springs, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, failure to drive in a single lane and careless driving. He was later freed on bond.
Reports: Deputies took a report of criminal mischief involving a vehicle at the Deep Creek Trailhead, a report of property damage on Corral Drive near Carbondale, and a report of suspected bank fraud in the Battlement Mesa area, all on Aug. 26.
Stolen vehicle: A deputy took a report of a stolen vehicle in the 300 block of County Road 352 near Rifle at 5 p.m. on Aug. 27. Officers issued an arrest warrant for the suspect and entered the vehicle as stolen into the law enforcement network.
Theft: A deputy took a report of a welder and accessories stolen from the 6200 mile of County Road 315 south of Silt on Aug. 27.
Driving under the influence: Deputies contacted a motorist for weaving on County Road 100 near Carbondale at 5:20 a.m. on Aug. 28. Edgardo Melgar, 28, of Carbondale, was cited for driving under the influence and failure to drive in a single lane, and was released to a sober party.
Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of County Road 352 near Rifle at 7 a.m. on Aug. 28. The driver was wanted on a $250 Rifle municipal court warrant for a harassment case. Stephen Everett Cruz, 43, of Silt, was lodged in jail on the warrant.
Burglary: Deputies investigated a burglary in the 800 block of Cedar Breaks Road near Rifle on Aug. 29. There is no suspect in the case.
Weapons violation: Deputies responded to the 4800 mile of County Road 320 south of Rifle at 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 on a report of a person making threats with a gun. The case was investigated and turned over to the district attorney. No further information was provided.
House fire: Deputies assisted with a house fire in the 2500 block of Midland Avenue at 2 a.m. on Aug. 30. The fire was determined to be accidental. One person was transported to Valley View Hospital for treatment.
Warrant arrest: Deputies stopped a motorist on Stone Quarry Road in Battlement Mesa at 7:15 a.m. on Aug. 30 for an improperly attached license plate. The driver, Kendall Lee Witt, 18, of Parachute, was wanted on a failure to comply warrant in a misdemeanor case. He was arrested on the warrant and cited for new charges of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and an improperly attached license plate.

A crew from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center last week cut disks of wood from trees downed by a powerful avalanche that thundered off Garrett Peak in March 2019. The samples will aid research by dendrochronologists into the epic avalanche cycle.
