Garfield County prep sports roundup for Nov. 5-10

Football

Glenwood’s Demons (5-5) traveled to Grand Junction to take on the Palisade Bulldogs on Friday night in a must-win situation for their playoff hopes. The Demons dropped the season-ending contest 35-14. Rifle (1-8) finished up the 2024 schedule on a positive note with a 28-21 upset at Steamboat Springs. Basalt (10-0) the state’s #2 seeded class 2A team, hosted a first round playoff game on Saturday afternoon, and Coach Carl Frerich’s Longhorns bested The Academy by a score of 42-14. Basalt will be at home again in a quarterfinal matchup this weekend against the Sterling Tigers.

Soccer

After first round wins at home on Tuesday night in frigid weather, the Roaring Fork Rams (13-3-2) and Rifle Bears (14-3-1) got more of the same when they met up in a state quarterfinal playoff game Saturday afternoon in Rifle. The Rams will be moving on to Wednesday’s state semi-final round at a neutral site after edging the Bears 3-2. Roaring Fork will await the winner of Monday’s game between Holy Family and Kent Denver.

Volleyball

Coal Ridge and Glenwood Springs both qualified for the regional round of the state volleyball playoffs. Class 3A Coal Ridge (11-14) made the trip over the mountains to Platte Valley High School in Kersey. The Titans lost to Platte Valley 3-0 in the morning match and then lost the afternoon match to Forge Christian 3-0. Glenwood’s regional, at Cheyenne Mountain High School was delayed until Sunday afternoon due to the severe snowstorm on the eastern slope. The Demons started the day against Air Academy, where they won 3-0, before falling to Cheyenne Mountain by a score of 0-3.
