Garfield County Sheriff’s Report
Editor’s note: The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Menacing, assault: At 2:32 a.m. on Aug. 23, deputies were dispatched to a report of a cold assault in the 200 mile of County Road 333 outside of Rifle. After further investigation, Marcos Bencomo, 27, of Rifle, was arrested and transported to the Garfield County Jail for menacing and assault in the third degree.
Driving under restraint: At 2:34 a.m. on Aug. 23, deputies arrested Erik Estrada Salinas, 25, of Aspen, for driving with a revoked license at County Road 114 and Highway 82 near Glenwood Springs. He was lodged at the county jail.
Instruction permit violation: At 6:22 p.m. on Aug. 23, a deputy contacted a motorcycle at County Roads 300 and 303 in Battlement Mesa for a traffic violation. The 16-year-old driver did not have a driver’s license, proof of insurance or registration and was issued a summons for a violation of restrictions on a temporary instruction permit, failure to wear protective eyewear and displaying fictitious plates. The motorcycle was impounded.
Driving under the influence, open container: At 11:23 p.m. on Aug. 23, deputies stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction on I-70 near Rulison. After further investigation, Jeffrey Ross Schmidt, 48, of Watsonville, Calif., was arrested and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence and open container and transported to the Garfield County Jail. He was released on bond.
Possession, underage drinking: At 1:41 a.m. on Aug. 24, a deputy contacted a vehicle at West 24th Street and Railroad Avenue outside of Rifle for a traffic violation. The driver, Jason Dale Shaver, 19, of Parachute, was issued a summons for possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Two passengers, Coree Dyllan Simonds, 20, of Parachute, and Alexa Rachelle Chenoweth, 18, of Parachute, were also issued a summonses for minor in possession of alcohol.
Warrant arrest: At 5:12 p.m. on Aug. 24, deputies arrested Jeffrey Allen Craw, 50, of Rifle, in the 100 block of County Road 333 outside of Rifle for a municipal warrant. He was taken to the county jail on the charge and later released on bond.
Underage drinking: At 3:31 a.m. on Aug. 25, deputies contacted a 16-year-old juvenile on I-70 near Rifle. The juvenile was found to be intoxicated and in possession of alcohol and was subsequently issued summonses for underage drinking and being a pedestrian on the highway under the influence and was released to a guardian.
Driving under restraint: At 6:10 a.m. on Aug. 25, deputies contacted a defective vehicle on County Road 215 outside of Parachute. After further investigation, it was determined the driver had a revoked driver’s license for a previous alcohol offense. Randall B. Wilhelm, 44, of Rifle, was arrested and transported to the Garfield County Jail and later released on bond. Wilhelm was then arrested at 11:24 p.m. on Aug. 26 for a violation of a restraining order in the 200 block of Bent Creek Circle in Battlement Mesa and was taken to the county jail and later released on bond.
