Garfield County Sheriff’s Report
Editor’s note: The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Fire near Silt: At shortly after 5 a.m. on Dec. 12, deputies assisted the Colorado River Fire Rescue Authority with a structure fire outside the Silt city limits.
Two dogs no longer at large: At 8:22 a.m. on Dec. 12, deputies nabbed two dogs running at large in the Battlement Mesa area, a black male lab and a white/black male heeler with three legs. The dogs were taken to the Divide Creek shelter.
Two other dogs at large: At 12:03 a.m. on Dec. 13, deputies took a report of two dogs running at large near Carbondale. The owner of the dogs was ticketed and released.
DUI on 100 Road: At shortly after midnight on Dec. 15, Brandon Robert Schneider, 21, of Carbondale, was stopped for running a stop sign on County Road 100 (Catherine Store Road) outside Carbondale. He subsequently was arrested for drunken driving and taken to the Garfield County Jail.
Party vehicle: At 2:17 a.m. on Dec. 15, deputies stopped a vehicle for weaving on Highway 82 near Carbondale, and subsequently ticketed Carlos A. Esquivel, 19, of Basalt and Ashley I. Ventura, 18, of El Jebel, on charges of possession of alcoholic beverages by a minor, and Ventura was jailed on a charge of harassment.
Theft and trespass near Rifle: On Dec. 15 deputies took two different reports, about four hours apart, of theft and trespassing incidents on Garfield County Road 227 (Miller Lane) near Rifle. The incidents were reported at 11:48 a.m. and 3:58 p.m. No suspects were reported in either incident.
Dog harassing livestock: At 1:50 p.m. on Dec. 15, deputies ticketed Thomas Stuart Platze, 69, of Silt, for owning a dog that was harassing livestock south of Silt.
Dog bites man: At 11:23 a.m. on Dec. 17, animal control responded to a dog bite incident in the Battlement Mesa area. The victim was treated at a Rifle hospital and released.
Dog complaint: At 8:36 a.m. on Dec. 19, deputies were dispatched to a complaint about a dog in custody in Rifle. The dog in question had no identification, and was taken to an area animal hospital to be housed.
Busted for pot: At 9:16 a.m. on Dec. 19, deputies and the Parachute Police Department were dispatched to a disturbance on Sagemont Circle in Battlement Mesa. After an investigation, deputies arrested Cody P. Shilling, 18, of Fruita, and jailed him on charges of violating a restraining order, harassment, possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana, and domestic violence.
Another dog complaint: At 9:25 p.m. on Dec. 19, deputies responded to a dog complaint in Battlement Mesa and took custody of a white/black male Chihuahua mix with a brown leather collar. The dog was taken to the Divide Creek shelter.
Domestic disturbance: At 2:06 p.m. on Dec. 20, deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance on Rainbow Drive in Silt. Upon investigation, deputies determined no crime had been committed. But they arrested Christopher E. Castillo, 28, of Silt, on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with court orders, and took him to the Garfield County Jail.
Unattended death: At 9:27 p.m. on Dec. 21, deputies were advised of an unattended death in the Missouri Heights area north of El Jebel. The case remains open pending a coroner’s report.
Drinking minor: At 9:53 p.m. on Dec. 21, deputies responded to a citizen-assist call from Angelica Circle in the Parachute area. After an investigation, a 17-year-old was summoned into court on a charge of possession of alcohol.
Vehicle vandalism: At 10:46 p.m. on Dec. 21, deputies were dispatched to check out a vandalized vehicle on Tamarisk Trail outside of Parachute. During an investigation, they discovered that another vehicle also had been tampered with. The case is under investigation.
Dog bite: At 12:12 p.m. on Dec. 22, deputies responded to a dog bite incident on County Road 117 (Four Mile Road). The dog’s owner was not present at the residence involved, but the dog was taken into custody and placed under quarantine.
Domestic violence: At 1:36 a.m. on Dec. 23, deputies were dispatched to a disturbance on Bent Creek Circle outside of Parachute. After an investigation, the deputies arrested Clinton Lee Pontius, 32, and Christian Shaunta Bellard, 27, both of Parachute, and jailed them on charges of domestic violence.
Car theft: At 9:09 a.m. on Dec. 23, deputies were dispatched to a reported vehicle theft near Glenwood Springs. The case is under investigation.
Harassment: At 10:32 p.m. on Dec. 24, deputies were dispatched to a reported disturbance on Coryell Ridge Road outside of Glenwood Springs. A 14-year-old was issued a summons into court on a charge of harassment.
