Garfield County Sheriff’s Report

Editor’s note: The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Underage drinking: Deputies responded to a report at 11:57 a.m. on Oct. 18 that a juvenile in the 35000 block of Highway 6 near Silt was under the influence of alcohol. Deputies issued a 14-year-old juvenile from New Castle a summons for minor in possession.

Warrant arrest: Deputies responded to a report of a verbal disturbance on County Road 241 near New Castle at 4:59 p.m. on Oct. 18. It was determined that no crime had been committed, but James Arthur Gay, 51, of New Castle, was arrested on an active warrant from Arapahoe County for failure to appear.



Speeding, underage drinking: Deputies pulled over a vehicle in Glenwood Springs for speeding in the 2400 block of South Glen Avenue at 12:38 p.m. on Oct. 19. The driver, Ryan Larssen Sather, 19, of Centennial, was issued a summons. Three passengers, John M. O’Brien, 20, of Ellsworth, Ryan Holroyd, 19, of Centennial, and Taylor Morgan Kennedy, 18, of Glenwood Springs, were issued summonses for underage drinking.

Vehicle theft: Deputies received a report of a stolen vehicle at 4:25 p.m. on Oct. 19 in the 2000 mile of County Road 215. Officers are investigating.



Driving under the influence, possession: Deputies responded to a traffic complaint at 7:16 p.m. on Oct. 19 on Interstate 70. The suspected vehicle was pulled over for speeding and weaving. The driver, Derek Lyle Hendricks, 27, of Denver, was arrested for DUI, no proof of insurance and possession of drug paraphernalia, along with the traffic charges.

Possession: Deputies arrested Samuel Richard Frost, 46, of New Castle, in the 4000 mile of County Road 335 at 11 p.m. on Oct. 19, for possession of less than one gram of amphetamines, and Julie Mae Comer, 40, of New Castle, was issued a summons for possession of less than two ounces of marijuana.

Marijuana: Deputies stopped a motorist for speeding in the 2500 mile of County Road 117 south of Glenwood Springs at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 20. Justin Adam Fullerton, 28, of Glenwood Springs was cited for speeding 10 mph over the limit and for possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Littering: Deputies were called on Oct. 20 about a littering incident in Silt. The suspect, John William Kubik, 75, of Glenwood Springs was contacted later and cited for littering.

Warrant arrest: Deputies stopped a motorist for speeding at mile 111 on I-70 at 11:15 p.m. on Oct. 21. Matthew Dougherty Markle, 26, of Golden was arrested on a Douglas County warrant and cited for speeding 10 mph over the limit and driving while his license was revoked.

Driving under the influence: Deputies stopped a motorist at the intersection of county roads 233 and 225 near Rifle at 1 a.m. on Oct. 22. The driver, Douglas Miles Stewart, 62, of Rifle, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, failing to drive in a single lane, driving with an open container of alcohol and resisting arrest.

Disorderly conduct: Deputies responding to a brush fire in the 1200 block of West Battlement Parkway at 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 22 contacted a man nearby who appeared to be intoxicated. Derrick Randell Hamn, 20, of Parachute was arrested on suspicion of underage drinking, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.

Warrant arrest: Deputies contacted a man on Mel Ray Road in West Glenwood at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 regarding arrest warrants from Mesa and Delta counties. Ted Robert Jones, 51, of Silt was arrested on the warrants.

Trespass: Deputies were advised about hunters crossing private land in the 600 block of County Road 317 south of Rifle at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 23. An investigation revealed that a man had entered another person’s car. William David Hutzley, 69, of Carbondale was cited for trespass.

Driving under restraint: Deputies stopped a motorist at mile 90 on eastbound I-70 at 5:40 p.m. on Oct. 23 for license plate violations. Arlis Jacob Draves, 21, of Castle Rock, was arrested on suspicion of driving while his license was under restraint, driving without proof of insurance and driving without a valid registration sticker.
