Garfield County Sheriff’s Report

Editor’s note: The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.

Driving under the influence: Deputies contacted a vehicle at 1:07 a.m. on Jan. 13 for failing to dim headlamps to oncoming traffic on Highway 82 near Carbondale. Judy Renate Flowers, 51, of Basalt, was subsequently issued a summons for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and released to a sober party.

Reckless driving, possession, driving under the influence: Deputies conducted a traffic stop at 5:19 a.m. on Jan. 13 on Highway 82 in the Carbondale area. During the stop it was discovered that the driver of the truck was under the influence of alcohol, and in possession of narcotics and drug paraphernalia. Juan Carranza, 20, of El Jebel, was arrested and transported to the Garfield County Jail. He was released on bond.



Possession: Deputies stopped a vehicle on Interstate 70 outside of Parachute area for speeding at 2:40 p.m. on Jan. 13. During the course of the investigation marijuana was found in the vehicle. Kiley Brenna Mcgowan, 18, of Westminster, was issued a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia; J’ezeriah Scott Gaitan, 18, of Grand Junction, was issued a summons for possession of drug paraphernalia and less than two ounces of marijuana; and Adnan Hassan, 18, of Grand Junction, was issued a summons for possession of less than two ounces of marijuana. All three were released from the scene.

Possession: A deputy responded to a drug complaint at 5:38 p.m. on Jan. 13 in the 300 block of Sipprelle Drive in Parachute. A juvenile suspect was identified and issued a summons for possession of less than two ounces of marijuana.



Theft: A deputy responded to a theft in the 100 block of West Tamarack Circle near Parachute at 5:57 p.m. on Jan. 13. No suspects were identified. The case is closed and inactive pending further evidence.

Vicious animal: Deputies took a report of a dog bite that occurred at 9:32 p.m. on Jan. 13 in the 100 block of Silver Queen Circle in Parachute. Deputies investigated the incident and issued Ruth Lynn Hartsell, 46, of Parachute a summons for a vicious animal.

Warrant arrest, trespass: Deputies were patrolling a local high school basketball game at 10:32 p.m. on Jan. 13 when they were approached by a Rifle SRO who advised them of a party at the game with a warrant. Bradley Neil Kasperek, 20, of New Castle, was arrested for the warrant and also issued a summons for third-degree trespass.

Driving under restraint, possession of a stolen firearm: A Deputy contacted a vehicle in the 5000 mile of County Road 100 near Carbondale for an equipment violation at 10:58 a.m. on Jan. 14. Rustin Dale Gudim, 39, of Carbondale, was found to have a canceled driver’s license and was summonsed for the violation. During a search of the vehicle, a deputy located a firearm that was reported stolen from another jurisdiction. Gudim was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of a stolen firearm and the firearm was seized. He was released on bond.

Assault, domestic violence: Deputies responded to a call to the Garfield County Courthouse for a cold domestic case at 2:32 p.m. on Jan. 14. Jeffrey David King, 41, of Carbondale, was later arrested on a warrant stemming from the case.

Tampering: At 2:33 p.m. on Jan. 14, deputies took a report of criminal tampering of vehicles in the 1300 mile of County Road 294 outside of Rifle. The case is closed pending further information.

Warrant arrest: At 3:21 p.m. on Jan. 14, deputies arrested Jesse Orlando Moya, 37, of Rifle, in the 1300 mile of County Road 294 outside of Rifle on an outstanding warrant. He was released on bond.

Driving under the influence: Deputies contacted a vehicle at 2:58 a.m. on Jan. 15 at mile marker 100.5 on Highway 6 outside of Silt for failing to drive in a single lane. Paul William Pedersen, 38, of Silt, was subsequently released to a sober party and issued a summons for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, open container and other charges.

Assault: Deputies received a report at 4:04 a.m. on Jan. 15 of an inmate on inmate assault that occurred in the Garfield County Jail. Luis Hernandez-Gutierrez, 25, of Basalt, was issued a summons and sent back to the jail.
