Gary Francis Shields, 64, passed away at Glen Valley Care Center Jan. 27, 2006.Gary was born in Denver to Darrell Francis and Ella Florence (Bennett) Shields. Gary worked for many years as a carpenter and general contractor. He had been an area resident for 36 years. Gary served four years in the U.S. Navy.He married Patricia K. Bernhardt in 1962, and they had three children. He was an avid golfer, and especially enjoyed golfing with his closest friends. Gary loved his church in Gypsum, where he was a member for many years. After moving to Silt, he continued to travel every Sunday to Gypsum to attend services. He highly admired his pastors.He is survived by son Darrell Francis (Erica) Shields; daughters Yvonne Louise Shields, and Diane R. (Mike) Renteria; brother Elwood L. (Joanne) Shields; sisters Susan A. (Dale) Craig, and Ramona Lawrence; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and friends.Gary was preceded in death in 1999 by his wife of 37 years. He loved spending time at his wife’s graveside after she passed away.A visitation will take place from 3-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Farnum-Holt Funeral Home Chapel, 405 W. Seventh St., Glenwood Springs. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the First Lutheran Church of Gypsum, 0148 Eagle in Gypsum. Pastor Don Marxhausen will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Gypsum. Farnum-Holt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
